Kickball was the first third-party Foursquare client and social photo sharing app. At a time when location-based services were having trouble finding their roadmap, we did what felt natural. We added photo and maps. Quick check-in (press and hold a location or friend). Simplified push notifications. Integrated Twitter and Facebook clients.
Beyond that, we had plans to integrate XBOX Live for non-physical location check-ins. Plus user-generated badges and King of the Hood (like mayorships, but of an entire neighborhood). It was #1 in the App Store, used in 9 countries and downloaded millions of times (when Foursquare only had a 500k userbase). Kickball was retired in 2011, but is now open-source and available on GitHub—including all design files.
